An apostille certifies the origin of a public document, including the authenticity of its signature, the capacity in which the signer acted, and any applicable seal or stamp. It is used for international document authentication where the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961 applies. An apostille does not certify the document’s contents or guarantee acceptance for every purpose. Our apostille requirements by country page provides country-specific information. WHY APOSTILLES ARE REQUESTED: Receiving institutions abroad may require an apostille before accepting a public document issued in the United States. Apostilles are commonly requested for dual citizenship applications, international marriages, spouse visas, business formation abroad, study abroad programs, student visas, foreign real estate transactions, international adoptions, work visa applications, digital nomad visa applications, retirement visa applications, and Golden Visa investment programs. The applicable requirements depend on the document, destination, and receiving institution. When the apostille process does not apply, a separate authentication and embassy or consular legalization process may be necessary. WHO ISSUES APOSTILLES IN THE UNITED STATES? Apostilles are issued by competent government authorities. State documents are submitted to the appropriate authority for the state where they were issued or notarized. Florida apostilles are handled by the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee. Our Florida apostille information covers all 67 counties, and our nationwide processing information covers all 50 states. Federal documents requiring apostilles, such as eligible FBI background checks, are submitted to the U.S. Department of State. We review documents to identify the appropriate authority and any preliminary requirements. THE APOSTILLE PROCESS: First, we review the document to identify its eligibility, issuing authority, destination, and whether notarization or another certification is needed. Second, the document is prepared for submission, including notarization when appropriate. Third, it is submitted to the appropriate state or federal agency. Fourth, the government authority processes the request and attaches the apostille or authentication when applicable. Fifth, the completed document is shipped or delivered back to the client. NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: We assist with apostille processing for documents issued in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Documents are submitted to the appropriate authority based on their origin; receiving them at our Miami office does not mean their apostilles are issued in Florida. Country-specific resources also cover FBI background checks for Spain, FBI background checks for Mexico, Spain non-lucrative visa documents, and Spanish-language guidance for Colombia and Venezuela. EMBASSY AND CONSULAR LEGALIZATION: Not every international document submission uses the apostille process. We assist with consulate submissions in Miami and related legalization services.
